Configuring a Swap File in Windows - Step-by-Step Guide

A swap file is a section of hard drive space that Windows uses to swap data that would normally be stored in RAM. When the RAM is full, data is swapped out to the swap file to free up space in the RAM. This can be helpful for systems with low amounts of RAM or for applications that require a lot of memory. In this tutorial, we will show you how to create and configure a swap file in Windows.

Prerequisites

  • Windows 11, 10, 8 or 7
  • Administrator access

Step 1: Create the Swap File

  • Select the option to "Set one or more custom sizes" and enter the desired size of the swap file in MB in the "Size of swap file per drive" field. Note that the recommended size for the swap file is about 1.5 times the size of the RAM.
  • Click "OK" and restart the system.
