How to Test Your RAM in Windows

There are two methods you can use to test your RAM in Windows: the built-in Memory Diagnostics tool (mdsched.exe) and an external tool. Here are the steps for each method:

Prerequisites

  • Windows 11, 10, 8 or 7

Method 1: Memory Diagnostics Tool (mdsched.exe)

  • Press the

    R

    to open the Run dialogue.

  • Type mdsched.exe and press Enter.
  • Select "Restart now and check for problems (recommended)".
  • Your computer will restart and begin the memory diagnostic tool.
  • Wait for the test to complete. This may take several minutes.
  • If no errors are found, you will see a message saying so. If errors are found, they will be listed on the screen. You may need to replace your RAM if errors are found.

Method 2: External Tool

  • Download and install a RAM testing tool, such as Memtest86.
  • Restart your computer and boot from the tool.
  • Follow the prompts to begin the test.
  • Wait for the test to complete. This may take several hours.
  • If no errors are found, you will see a message saying so. If errors are found, they will be listed on the screen. You may need to replace your RAM if errors are found.
